What to Do When Your Hot Water Tank Fails

If you have found this article because your hot water heater has stopped working, here are the immediate steps you should take:

1. Shut off the water to your hot water heater. There are three places you can do this.

  1. The shut off valve should be on the top of the water heater.
  2. Look for the pipe that is feeding water to the hot water heater, and look for a valve.
  3. Shut off the water to your house by finding the main shut off valve.
  1. Turn off your hot water heater. The instructions on how to do this should be on your water heater. If you have any questions, call us, and we’ll walk you through it.
  2. Drain the water from your hot water heater. Turn a faucet on to ensure that no vacuum forms in the pipes, Attach a hose to the drain valve, which is usually located on the back (check your owner's manual if you can't find it). Put the other end of the hose somewhere to drain and open the drain valve.
