Supermarket Strategies: How to Save Big and Eat Healthier

Many factors are contributing to the rising food prices at the grocery store including oil prices, unsatisfactory crop yields and the weakening American dollar.

Plan your meals.

  • Write out what meals you will cook for the week , make a shopping list and stick to it.
  • Base the meals off of food you already have. Take a quick inventory and use web/var/aegir/platforms/smpv4/sites that will help build meals off of the ingredients you have. A great website for this is www.Supercook.com.
  • Buy staple items in bulk.
  • Cook in bulk to have leftovers or to freeze. Either eat the leftovers for lunch or create a new meal based off of them.
  • Base meals off of what's on sale at the stores. Read your local ads.
  • Swap out items for generics. Some items, like certain cereals and sodas just don't compare to most people, but things like flour, sugar, milk, oil and cooking soups work just fine.
  • Compare ingredient lists and see how they measure up to one another.
  • Eat vegetarian a few times a week. Not only will you save money but you'll feel physically better. Beans, legumes and vegetables are considerably cheaper than meats and healthier.
  • Eat in season. Fewer miles for food to travel=less expensive.

Avoid Pre Packaged Goods

  • Don’t pay extra for “pre” items. Do the slicing, dicing and washing yourself.
  • Skip instant mashed potatoes and make them from scratch.
  • Try to do most of your shopping around the perimeter of the grocery store– all of the boxed, processed foods are in the middle aisles.
  • Gravies, stocks and sauces can be made from scratch. If your having chicken one night simply save the stock to make soup later.
  • When purchasing canned goods check to see if they are on sale fresh.

Get your food in places other than the big chain grocery store.

  • Grow your own garden. How convenient would it be to go outside your house for groceries? You also know what is going into your food this way i.e. pesticides and chemicals.
  • Buy from farms or farmers markets. Skip the middle man and support your local farmers.
  • Try discount stores and dollar stores. The Grocery Outlet has great prices, especially on cheese. And the dollars stores have condiments and spices for only a dollar.
  • When you do shop at the chains go where the sales are and use coupons

Don't skimp on the healthier stuff

Spend the few cents extra for healthier things such as better meats (less filler and chemicals), breads– skip white
and get whole grain and anything with less sugar, like juices.

Mexican Pasta Casserole

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces dried mostaccioli or rigatoni pasta (3 cups)
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 16 ounce jar green medium-hot salsa
  • 2 8 ounce package shredded Monterey Jack cheese or
  • (4 cups)
  • Tomato wedges, sliced jalapeno peppers and chopped
  • fresh cilantro
  • Salsa (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease 3-quart rectangular baking dish; set aside. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain; set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, in large skillet cook sausage and onion until meat is browned and onion is tender. Drain fat, Return sausage and onion to skillet. Stir in green salsa.
  3. In prepared baking dish layer half of the cooked pasta, half the sausage mixture, and half the cheese. Repeat layers. Bake, uncovered, for 35 minutes or until bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes. Top with tomato, jalapeno, and cilantro. If desired, serve with additional salsa. Makes 12 servings.
